EaseUS ToDo Backup Usability

In this section of this EaseUS ToDo Backup review I will be looking at this highly functional piece of backup software in more detail, this includes assessing how well it performs in basic backup tasks as well as looking at some of the many additional functions including the Smart backup functionality and the file recovery options. This starts off with the installation process and then moves on to making a file backup, restoring files, making use of the full system image backups and then, finally, looking at some of the other tools and features included in EaseUS ToDo Backup.

Different Versions Available

There are several different versions of EaseUS ToDo Backup, these include a free to use version, a cloud subscription version (with optional cloud storage included) and a perpetual version with the ability to upgrade to having free lifetime upgrades!

As of time of writing, the full range of EaseUS ToDo Backup options includes:

• EaseUS ToDo Backup Free: The free version of ToDo Backup has access to a good amount of the core functionality usually found in the fully functional Home version, this includes the ability to make both file level and system image backups as well as conserve disk space thanks to use of the full, incremental and differential backup schemes on offer. The free version also allows full use of 3rd party cloud storage providers including Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive.
• EaseUS ToDo Home (Subscription): The full version of ToDo Home Backup builds upon the solid free version to make for a fully functional backup application. One of the first and most notable additions includes the ability to make use of the Smart backup tool, a special tool which is ideal for getting a full backup set working in little time and with very little fuss. Alongside this, several other useful tools are available which include the ability to clone single disks or an entire system to a new PC (via the universal restore component).
• EaseUS ToDo Home (Perpetual): The perpetual licence version of ToDo Backup is functionally the same as the subscription version mentioned above, the main difference being that the cloud storage provided by EaseUS (for an additional fee) cannot be included here (although 3rd party providers including Dropbox can still be used). This version can be purchased as a perpetual licence with lifetime free upgrades for just a single $59 payment!
• EaseUS ToDo Home (for Mac): A separate version of Ease ToDo Backup Home is also available for Apple MacOS users, this is priced at $39.95 / year.

Installing ToDo Backup

The Installation of EaseUS ToDo Backup begins at the EaseUS website, from here both the free to use and fully featured Home version of the software can be downloaded. At a reasonable 1.89MB in size, the Home version installer can be downloaded and set running very quickly, it did however, in my case download another 119MB of data during the install process itself!

Once this additional data has been downloaded, the installation takes only a final few moments before the software itself is then ready to be used. Overall, a very easy installation process slowed down only by the necessity to download an additional 119MB of data partway through.

* For the remainder of this review I will be focusing on the Home version of EaseUS ToDo Backup, I will however, look at some of the differences between the free and Home versions later on in the review!

Setting-up a New File Backup

Despite being a fully functional backup application with many backup related features, one of the core tasks required of such software is the setting up of a simple and easy to use file level backup, a task which begins via the “File Backup” button on the main (left side) application menu:

Once In the file backup configuration screen it becomes clear straight away that EaseUS have made the process of getting an initial backup running really easy, this begins by simply selecting the files to be backed-up using the file-picker in the top pane and then (ideally) giving the backup set a more memorable name a little further down:

The next step in configuring the backup, before going on to look at scheduling and advanced options such as encryption, is to select the destination upon which the backed-up data will be saved to. ToDo Backup has options for storing data on a locally attached external hard drive, a network or shared drive (NAS system) or in one of several supported cloud drives including Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.

* In this section I will use locally attached storage for this backup, I will look at making use of the EaseUS cloud set-up later on in this review.

With the storage target now selected, we can next look at (optionally) setting a schedule for the backup set to run upon, this begins in the dedicated scheduling pop-up screen which is accessed via the scheduling link towards the bottom of the main set-up screen:

As can be seen above, we can easily set ToDo Backup to run on a fixed schedule (every day, week or month), continuously on a fixed interval (e.g. every hour) or upon a special event triggering (such as a Windows user logging on or off amongst several others). We can also specify the backup method to be used from this same screen with full, incremental and differential backup scheme options all available and easy to apply by simply selecting the relevant choice form the drop-down box:

Moving on and via the “Backup options” button towards the bottom of the screen we can set some of the many advanced settings available within ToDo backup. This starts off with the “Space” tab where we can (optionally) split backup files into 650MB or 700MB segments for easy writing to data CDs and then on to the “Encryption” tab where full AES 256-bit encryption can be applied to the backup set.

* Note that use of secure AES 256-bit encryption is widely considered one of the best ways to protect you valuable data whilst it is being backed up, even if your device used for backup is lost or stolen (e.g. an external hard drive) then thanks to secure encryption your data will still remain highly secure!

Moving down through the advanced settings and we can also set performance settings (such as limiting the network bandwidth being used by the backup set) as well as setting up SMTP settings in order to be able to receive email alerts and backup reports.

Finally, under the advanced settings screen, we can also (optionally) send a secondary copy of the backup to an FTP server, set a filter to automatically exclude certain files, folders and specified file-types from the backup and preserve Windows file security settings when applicable to do so.

Moving on and the final setting to deal with before running our new backup set is the “Image Reverse Strategy” which can be accessed by a link towards the bottom of the configuration screen, this a pop-up window which allows us to specify how older versions of the backup are kept and for how long.

As can be seen above, this screen allows us to specify how long older versions of the backup files are to be kept on the target storage, a system which will, in-turn, also mean we can control the number of historic versions of any changed or deleted files and specify how long they are to be kept as a part of the backup. Sadly, due to the way this screen is configured, we will need to do a little bit of calculating here as to how often our backup runs in order to ensure we save enough historic versions for our own needs (e.g. if we run 3x backups per day then a minimum of 90 backups are needed to be kept to have 1 full month of historic versions available).

* Whilst this feature can help us control the number of historic versions of files which are kept available, an easy to use control just for this task would have been a nice addition here for a less experienced user (e.g. keep all historic versions for x days).

With everything now configured we can run the backup manually straight away or simply save the set and allow the scheduling engine to pick it up in due course.

Making use of Cloud Backups

In the last section I covered the process of making a file-level backup within ToDo Backup and saving the data to a locally attached hard drive. In this section I will look at modifying this backup set to make use of one of the popular 3^rd party cloud storage providers supported by EaseUS, in this case Dropbox.

As can be seen above, this process begins in the backup set configuration screen where we can make use of the backup destination screen to register a new cloud storage service to the EaseUS install. With this option selected, the next screen will ask us to choose the exact cloud storage service we want to configure (as can be seen below), in this example I will be making use of the Dropbox service.

Depending upon which cloud storage service you might choose, there will be an authentication process in order to authorise the backup software to connect to and make use of the cloud storage account. Making use of Dropbox myself simply required being re-directed to the Dropbox website, logging-in to the service and then finally clicking to confirm that the EaseUS software is able to save data to the account.

* Note that for this cloud storage service to become available within any version of ToDo Backup (including the free version), a free to register EaseUS account must be used (and logged-into through the current ToDo Backup install).

With the Dropbox account now linked to this instance of ToDo Backup, re-configuring the backup set to make use of it is as simple as opening up the backup destination screen to browse to the relevant folder on the Dropbox drive which is to be used:

With this destination now set, the file level backup will now backup to the Dropbox account. Additionally, with this cloud account now set-up and integrated into the current install, it can now also be selected for use with any other backup sets which might be configured in the future.

Full System Image Backups

At this stage in this EaseUS ToDo Backup review, we have looked at making use of the file level backup, this has been done with both locally attached storage and then, later on, modifying the set to make use of a 3^rd party cloud storage service. In this section I will be looking at making a full system image backup, an option useful for ensuring that all user data in addition to the operating system and all installed applications are safely backed-up.

Creating a full system image backup begins on the main app menu where we find the “Disk/Partition Backup entry” (as can be seen above), this opens up a new backup wizard-style screen where we can add any disks which make up the underlying Windows system to the backup set (disks which must be manually chosen at this stage).

As can be seen above, once we have added any disks and partitions which make up the Windows system, we can go on to configure other elements of the backup set. This configuration includes setting up of encryption, compression, an automatic schedule, the historic retention period for modified and deleted files and finally, a storage location for saving the backup. These settings all working in the same way as they did when I configured the file-level backup earlier on (so please refer to that section of the review for more details on each setting).

Moving on and at this point the new image level backup set will be ready to run and will appear in the main homepage of the app next to the file level backup set made earlier on. The backup can be run manually as and when required or simply left for the scheduling system to take over when applicable.

Thanks to the backup configuration screen integrated into EaseUS ToDo Backup, the creation of an image based backup is very similar to that of a file level backup set (with most of the settings such as encryption and scheduling applied in much the same way across the two). What this means is that the only additional thing to really consider when setting up an image level backup is what disks and partitions to include.

* In my opinion at least, this is a good approach to take regarding backup configuring versus some other providers which have completely different configuration screens / wizards for the two different styles of backup!

Using ToDo Smart Backup

Before moving on to look at the restore functionality within ToDo Backup, I want to point out another backup type which is really easy to use and can help in getting a system backed-up very quickly and with ease, this is the Smart backup!

As can be seen above, the Smart backup requires we simply select what files we want to backup (e.g. the Windows “My Documents” folder) and then a location to save the backup data to (this could be locally or in a pre-configured cloud storage drive, as was looked at earlier on). With both of these options set, simply clicking on “Save” will save the backup and set it running right away!

Once configured and saved, the Smart backup will automatically check for any changes within the files it is protecting every 30 minutes and automatically back said changes up when they are discovered.

* Whilst the Smart backup type is indeed useful and will manage many of the backup settings automatically by itself, it should be noted that historic file versions are effectively limited to a maximum historic file versioning period of just 15 days when using this plan.

Overall, Smart backup is a very nice feature and ideal for anyone wanting to get a backup in place quickly and with the minimal of effort (although I would still suggest taking the time to learn more about the app in due course and take advantage of the many advanced settings which are available).

Restoring Files

With both the file and image based backups now configured, we can begin looking a the process of restoring data using EaseUS ToDo Backup, a process which begins by navigating to the selected backup set in the main app homepage and then using the “Restore” button (as is pointed out below).

If a password has been set for the backup set being recovered from then this must be entered first, once at the main recovery screen (as can be seen below) the first thing to do is navigate to and select the files to be recovered using the file picking tool:

With any files selected, the next task is to (optionally) select the correct historic version to recover, this can be done using the historic version selection drop-down menu as can be seen below:

Finally, before setting the restore process going, the location to restore the files to can be selected (with a check box to easily specify that the original location is used when necessary). We can also specify that any existing files are optionally overwritten using this same section towards the bottom of the recovery screen.

At this point, after clicking on “Proceed”, the restore operation will commence and can be monitored using the same pop-up box in which it was initiated from, ToDo Backup also gives us the option to reboot or shut down to device once the restore has completed, especially useful when making use of large restore operations.

And with this, the recovered files will be available in the selected destination once the recovery process has finished running, be aware that recovering large amounts of files from any of the cloud storage providers might be a slow process depending upon the speed of your internet connection!

Other Tools & Features

With the core backup and recovery tasks now covered, there are still a lot of additional features within the software which can help in the running and maintenance of a Windows PC, I have listed some of these more notable functionalities below:

System Clone – The System Clone tool allows any disks or partitions which make up a Windows system to be cloned onto a new disk, a process which can also optimise for copying over to SSD drives when applicable.

Emergency Disk – The Emergency Disk tool allows the making of a bootable recovery media which can be used in the event a PC doesn’t boot up (this could be for many reasons, from a malware issue through to a failed hard drive and so on).

As can be seen above, the boot disk building tool found within EaseUS ToDo Backup is very comprehensive and allows the choice of either a Windows (WinPE) or Linux system to function as the base of the recovery disk (alongside the option to add-in specific driver files as and when needed). Finally, the tool is very flexible in that it also allows the recovery media to be written to a CD/DVD, a USB mass storage device or simply written to an ISO file and saved on the system for use at a later date.

Mount/Unmount – The Mount/Unmount tool allows the contents of a backup image to be mounted as a drive within Windows (with a drive letter), this means the backed-up content within can be browsed through using the Windows Explorer tool and files optionally recovered by simply dragging and dropping them over to the running system.

EaseUS ToDo Free vs Paid

EaseUS ToDO Backup is available in both a free to use version as well as a paid-for “Home” version with more features and functionalities for both Windows and MacOS users alike. In this section of this review I will be pointing out some of the notable additional features available in this paid for “Home” version of the tool:

• Smart Backup – The Smart backup tool which makes configuring a backup set quick and easy is only available in the Home version of ToDo Backup. It should be noted however, that this is the only main backup-related tool missing form the very functional free version!
• Disk Cloning / System Clone – The disk and system cloning tools are only available in the Home version of ToDo Backup. It should be noted, however, that the system image backup functionality is available in the ToDo Backup Free edition meaning some imaging related functionality is still available.
• Outlook Backup – The specialist Microsoft Outlook backup tools are only available in the Home version of ToDo Backup.
• File Exclusions – The file exclusion tool allows selected files, folders and file types (for example ISO files) to be automatically excluded form a backup set, as with the proceeding points this functionality is only available in the Home version of the software.

This above list is not exhaustive, but instead an example of a selection of the tools which are available (or enhanced) when upgrading from the free version to the full Home version of EaseUS ToDo Backup. Whenever making use of any backup software, one of the most important tasks to consider is the security of your backed-up data, a task which becomes especially important when using 3^rd party cloud storage which is not under your direct control! One of the most effective ways to keep such data secure when backing it up is to make use of strong encryption thus ensuring, even in the worse case if your data is compromised, that it remains strongly encrypted and safe throughout the process.

Thanks to the inclusion of AES 256-bit encryption within EaseUS ToDo Backup, we can easily set a password for any of the backup sets and take advantage of this strong level of data protection at the source of the backup (excluding the Smart backup, which is focused on ease of use).

EaseUS offer a free version of ToDo Backup which features many useful backup components including the ability to make a full system image backup amongst others. Supporting this free version is the fully functional EaseUS ToDo Backup Home which features many additional backup and disk imaging functionalities for both Windows PC and MacOS users.

In addition to this extra functionality, the Home versions are available to purchase in several configurations including with or without lifetime free upgrades included and on a monthly subscription with cloud storage provided as a part of the deal. As of time of writing the versions are priced as follows:

EaseUS Todo Backup Home review: This handy tool simplifies the backup process

A standout feature of EaseUS Todo Backup Home is how easy it is to do folder-level and image-level backups.

A good backup tool is essential for every user. If you’re an IT admin, a consumer-based backup utility probably will not be your go-to disaster recovery tool, mostly because of licensing issues. But if you’re a one-person shop or work from home, this type of backup could be ideal, especially when that backup offers a cloud option, so you don’t have to depend on external drives that can fail to house those critical backups.

The latest iteration of EaseUS Todo Backup Home has an easy to use interface; it might not be the most modern-looking GUI (Figure A), but it cuts out the clutter to make it a svelte and stripped down tool that doesn’t distract from the task at hand.

The heart of EaseUS Todo Backup Home is backing up your files, folders and drives. With this backup solution, you get full (all of the data included in your source folders), incremental (all of the data since your last backup), and differential (all of the changes since your last backup) backup methods as well as file, disk, smart and full system image backups/cloning. That means you could opt to back up a few folders that could be later restored to your local drive or create a full image backup that could be used to completely restore the operating system and all of the containing configurations and data.

To take this one step further, EaseUS Todo Backup Home offers backup file encryption support using AES 256-bit and even migrates an older platter drive to a new SSD.

EaseUS Todo Backup Home also features application/application data backup/restore. For example, you could create a new backup project that includes specific folders and your Apple Mail configuration/data. With this backup solution, you can also create a bootable Windows rescue disk (USB flash). In addition, you’ll find a handy folder sync option that makes it easy to keep a source and destination folder in sync with one another to ensure they always contain the same sub-folders and files.

Plus, EaseUS Todo Backup Home includes scheduling options that allow you to launch a backup at specific times on specific days or even run a backup when both source and destination are mounted. For example, you could create a backup for a specific set of folders or full image that runs as soon as you plug in the external drive associated with the job. That feature alone is worth the price of admission.

The backup tool’s other features include command support for both pre- and post-backups, raw or data-only images, password protection, file filtering, email notifications, compression and split backups in case you have a destination drive not large enough to house the backup on its own.

EaseUS Todo’s backup destination options

With EaseUS Todo Backup Home, you have a few options to select for your destination drive. You can save your backups to an internal directory (although I wouldn’t recommend backing up to the same drive), an external drive, and even a cloud option (1TB is included for only $59.95/year).

EaseUS Todo Backup also includes support for OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive. One caveat is that EaseUS Todo doesn’t work well with the official Google Drive Desktop client on macOS; in fact, when trying to get EaseUS Todo Backup to use a mounted Google Drive location, it totally froze up my desktop for about two minutes. I had to quit the Google Drive Client to recover my session.

The pricing details for EaseUS Todo Backup Home

EaseUS Todo Back offers three plans: Home Users, Business Users, Centralized Backup And Deploy. Since we’re focusing on the version for Home/Home office users, let’s take a look at the price structure for that plan.

The home version is priced from $39.95/yearly and is for one computer (macOS or Windows), one year of free upgrades, and standard tech support. You can add 1TB of cloud storage to this plan, which bumps it up to $59.95/yearly. You can also pay $59.95 for a perpetual license, but you receive no free upgrades or $79.95 for free lifetime upgrades.

EaseUS Todo Backup Home conclusion: A rock-solid solution

I’ve worked with some of the most complex backup systems on the market; I’ve also worked with backup solutions that are so basic they barely get the job done. It’s that middle ground that serves as the sweet spot, and EaseUS Todo Backup Home nails it. EaseUS ToDdo Backup’s ratio of features to ease of use is one of the best I’ve seen in a while. In about a minute, you can get your backup project created (Figure B) and running.

Thoughts on EaseUS Todo Backup

There are a few features missing from EaseUS Todo Backup, but overall we think it's a very good program.

What We Like

The restore feature may very well be our favorite thing about EaseUS Todo Backup. Similar backup programs require you to view a backup from within the program, but being able to mount a backup like it's an actual drive in Windows makes it extremely easy and natural to browse through.

We appreciate that a system partition backup is included. The fact that you can run it on a schedule makes it just that much more beneficial.

Securing a backup should be a feature in any good backup program, and EaseUS Todo Backup supports this.

It's rare to see a backup program that lets you run the software before booting into Windows without using a disc or flash drive to run it, which is what Pre-OS in this program allows. It's useful in the event your computer has been rendered unusable, and you need to restore the system partition.

What We Don't Like

We don't like that email notifications, event-based backups, custom commands, offsite copying, file exclusions, file type-based backups, Smart Backup, and System Clone aren't supported.

There are two paid plans of Todo Backup; Home and Business, with the former meant for individual use and the latter for enterprise use. For the Home version, you can buy an annual license for $39.95 or a perpetual license for $59.95 for each computer you want to back up. Likewise, you can pay $79.95 to guarantee a lifetime of free upgrades for each computer. 

The Business tier has a more flexible pricing plan. You can pay $49 for an annual license for each workstation, $199 for a Server license, or $299 for an Advanced Server license. The price decreases the more years you pay in one go.

Business users can purchase a package to guarantee technical support for a year ($999), 2 years ($1399), or a lifetime ($2499), which is steep. They can also pay extra fees to get access to a centralized backup management system.

You can take advantage of the 30-day free trial period to test Todo Backup before making your final purchase decision. Even at that, you can request a full refund for up to 30 days following your purchase if you’re not satisfied with it.

With Todo, you can back up individual files from your device so that you can retrieve them at any time. You can upload these files to personal storage devices or cloud storage provided by EaseUS. You may also upload them to external cloud storage services like Dropbox and Google Drive.

If you don’t want to back up specific files, you may backup the entire system, including program files. Hence, if there’s any data loss, you can always restore the backup and have your system working exactly as it did before. 

You may backup workstations (desktops or PCs) or physical and virtual servers. The downside is that Todo only works for servers running the Windows Server operating system. It can't work if you're running alternatives like Linux, Unix, and FreeBSD. Likewise, the backup platform only works for PCs running the Windows or macOS operating systems. You can’t use it if your PC is powered by Linux or other less popular desktop operating systems. 

Todo lets you secure backup files with passwords to prevent unauthorized access. This way, even if someone gains access to your account, they can't get to your backup files and leak them without knowing the specific passwords. 

During every backup process, Todo will send email notifications to inform you of the state of the backup mission. You can choose to receive such notifications when the backup is successful or if it fails in transit. 

Managing backups can be hectic. To make it easier, Todo lets you schedule backups ahead of time and make them happen regardless of if you’re present or not. With this feature, you can be sure of having frequent backups without having to manually do them yourself. It’s a critical feature for business users, where IT staff responsible for backups may go on vacation or be unavailable for many other reasons.

One good thing about Todo is that it lets you perform a “hot backup,” that is running a backup simultaneously while using your PC even if the data you want to backup is being read or edited. The platform also uses compression techniques to decrease the size of files as much as possible and save storage space (and costs) for users. 

Another critical feature we must mention is that Todo lets you create bootable disks. A bootable disk refers to a removable storage medium from which your computer can load and run an operating system. It's a lifesaver if your computer can't boot from its internal hard drive, or when that internal hard drive needs to be removed for repairs.

When it’s time to restore data that you have backed up, Todo lets you do that at the click of a button. However, when researching for this review, we noticed a pattern of custom complaints of the restore process being slower than expected and the platform not always notifying users through email when a backup fails.

One of the drawbacks of using Todo is that its user interface is quite clunky and confusing to new users. But, it’s a major improvement compared to how it was before EaseUS released a major update in 2022.

Lost or damaged data is the worst nightmare of anyone who works with computers. Imagine you’ve been working on a presentation for the last week. You’re delivering it in an hour, and you go to open the PowerPoint file to make a few last-minute adjustments.

But the file cannot be opened; your computer says that it’s corrupted. Instead of being well-prepared for your presentation, you’re going to need to improvise. That’s going to reflect badly on you. Nobody’s going to care that you lost an awesome PowerPoint to a drive failure. This can happen to anybody at any time, which is why it’s important to keep backups.

Of course, this is easier said than done. For example, you might have an external hard drive or cloud storage that you use for backups. But how often do you actually take the trouble to back up your files? Once a month? Once a year? Whenever you happen to remember it?

In any of those cases, you probably have a lot of data at risk. Not only that, but traditional backups can only do so much. If your operating system itself becomes corrupted, you might have to start over with a fresh install. Today, we’re going to review the EaseUS Todo Backup software. This is an automated backup software that’s designed to keep all of your backups up to date. The paid version unlocks additional features, like disc cloning and even network backups.

But how well does it work, and what kind of performance should you expect? To find out, we’ll have to take a much closer look at this software. We’ll need to talk about the user interface, and how you back up your files. We’ll have to talk about the automated features, and how you set them up. And we’ll also need to look at the powerful enterprise functions it offers. After that, we’ll have enough information to render a fair verdict. Let’s get started!

How Does EaseUS Todo Backup Work?

The EaseUS Todo Backup software works by creating an image file with all of your backed up files. An image file is a repackaging, or “image” of a drive with its own file structure. This image file can be opened with the correct software, and you can extract files from it.

You can also use image burning software to burn a CD or DVD of your image file’s contents. This disc can then be read like an ordinary drive. When you add files to your Todo backups, these files are simply added to the backup image.

One thing we liked about this software is the simple interface. You choose where you want to save your image files, and there’s a straightforward drag-and-drop interface. You drag whatever files you want into the backup window, and you can even add entire folders.

Once you’ve added everything you want to add, click the button, and your backup will be created. The process takes a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer and how much data you’re backing up. There’s virtually zero learning curve, and you’re basically guided through all the relevant steps. Our only complaint is the endless parade of popups begging you to pay for the full version of the software.

In addition to performing manual backups, you can set up automated scheduling. By turning on the Smart Backup feature, the software will monitor whatever files you back up. Whenever one of those files is modified, it will automatically be backed up. That way, you’ll always have the latest version of all of your work. You don’t even have to open the software to back up new files. Just right click them in Windows Explorer, and you can add them to Smart Backup with a single click.

Please keep in mind that this software only works on Windows computers. While it’s widely compatible with almost any PC, there’s no Mac version available as of yet. If you need to back up your files on a Mac, consider iBoysoft Mac Data Recovery. This is a similar software, but it’s made for Mac instead of Windows.

Another way to use the Todo Backup Software is to back up your entire drive. This keeps all of your files backup, without the hassle of selecting them individually. There are three different drive backup options, with the first being a full backup. This is exactly what it sounds like. All files on your drive or partitioned are backed up to the same image file.

A differential backup can be performed any time after you’ve done a full backup. This option will update only any files that have changed since the last full backup. You won’t waste time re-backing up files that haven’t been altered. Alternatively, you can perform an incremental backup. This only backs up data that has been updated since the last incremental update. Once you’ve done your first full backup, you’ll probably only ever use this option.

But let’s say the worst has happened and you’ve already lost your files. If they haven’t been backed up, are you really out of luck? In that case, you could use the iBeeSoft Free Data Recovery software. This program is designed to recover corrupted data that had not been backed up prior to its loss. It’s not effective in 100% of cases, but all in all, it works pretty well.

The paid version of EaseUS Todo Backup is affordable, and there’s a one-time fee for each installation. There are no ongoing subscription fees, so the upfront cost is all you pay.

With the paid version of the software, you’ll have access to a smorgasbord of extra features. These won’t be necessary for most individual users, but they’re a great value for professionals. For one thing, you can take advantage of advanced automated backups. Every 30 minutes, any new or updated files will be backed up. And every 7 days, Todo Backup will create a fresh full backup.

Not only that, but you can create a clone of an entire disc or partition. This isn’t just a copy of your files. This is a complete backup of all your data, including your drivers, operating system, and personal Windows settings. You can use it to create a bootable USB drive, and take your “home computer” with you anywhere.

You can also use the image to create a brand new hard drive. If your old drive has completely failed, you won’t have to buy a new copy of Windows. Just install your new drive, and you can use the image to clone an exact replica of your old drive.

If your primary purpose is mass-cloning hard drives, there are some other options. For example, you can use a hard drive duplicator dock. Leave your original drive in the source slot, and make as many copies as you need. Of course, you need to have a source drive to begin with, and a backup image could still be helpful.

Another major benefit of the paid software is the ability to back up your Microsoft Outlook data. To begin with, you’ll be able to back up entire chains of emails. This is important if you’re using a POP email service, since your emails won’t be saved in the cloud. Along with your emails, you can back up all your other important data. Your contacts, calendars, and file attachments will all be securely backed up.

Valuable Enterprise Features

The paid version of EaseUS Todo Backup doesn’t just provide value for individual professionals. It’s also a useful tool for enterprise level applications. First and foremost, you can deploy it on every computer within a network.

To be fair, you’ll need a license for each PC. But all of these backups can be coordinated and automated remotely, without input from individual users. You can store all of your company’s backups on a central server, ensuring that a lost laptop doesn’t mean lost data.

Along the same lines, this software isn’t limited to PCs and laptops. It can be deployed just as easily on Windows-based servers. If you’re running your own servers, you need an emergency data backup, and this is a great option. In the event that your servers go down, your company’s data will be safe and secure. Traditional disaster recovery services will charge you a small fortune for the same service. Why overpay when your own IT staff can do the job easily and affordably?

Another important benefit of Todo Backup is the Universal Restore feature. Traditional cloning software has struggled with compatibility between different systems. For example, let’s say you’re cloning your drive and installing it in a new computer.

Depending on the computer’s configuration, the drive might boot, or it might not. With Universal Restore, the EaseUS software automatically makes the necessary compatibility adjustments. You can clone a drive and boot it on a different PC without any issues. You can even move back and forth between physical and virtual platforms. There’s also, of course, the usual array of backup bells and whistles: scheduling (including smart near-real time backups), pre- and post-backup commands, raw or data-only images, password protection, file filtering, after-job email notifications, compression and CPU settings, etc. You can also split backups to accommodate smaller target media such as optical discs.

The program also supports a wide variety of hardware backup media. LTO tape is supported on the $49 Enterprise Workstation version, but that’s not reviewed here. Optical is supported by all paid versions, along with most other removable media. You can, of course, back up to any type of storage that you can mount and assign a drive letter to.

EaseUS ToDo Backup can also be run from its own Windows PE (Pre-install Environment) boot disk (i.e., emergency disk), should your system crash and you need to restore it. This of course requires that you’ve imaged the drive previously and the backup must be local. EaseUS told me that a system restore from the cloud will be supported within the coming year, but at the moment online storage isn’t supported in any way from the boot disk.

You can also restore individual files from the boot disk, but you’re likely better off reinstalling ToDo on your new OS install for that chore. The boot disk lacks access to your cloud storage.

I was very much impressed with the way ToDo Backup arranged functions and walked me through the backup/recovery processes. While I’m an old hand, it shouldn’t overly tax the skills of new users—at least those with a basic understanding of computers and where files are stored.

ToDo Backup makes it easy to select what you want to back up, and provides easy options (shown below) for the most common backup operations: your Outlook email and your operating system. The latter is simply imaging the entirety of the disk that you boot your operating system from. If you use other email programs, use the file and folder backup for your email.

You can also back up your system with the more versatile disk backup, but the OS option simplifies a not necessarily intuitive process that includes several partitions and might fool less experienced users.

One thing to note is that while there’s a large Browse to recover button, you’re better off right-clicking on the appropriate backup job in the list to the left of the interface and selecting Recovery. This takes you right to the backup even if you don’t remember where it is. Also note that ToDo Backup places backups inside a subfolder labeled with your computer’s name—not at the root level of the destination you selected.

As I hinted at, ToDo Backup’s GUI is still basically wizard-driven, though the look has been revamped since our last review. The color motif is more serious, using shades of gray, and there’s also some very nice animation. In particular, one animation shows data flowing like air from the source to the target location (see the image below). It’s a bit of unexpected fun, if no more revelatory than the simple progress bar that’s also present.

I tested all the basic backup jobs, which proceeded largely at the pace dictated by the media involved. In other words, performance was about on par with most backup programs. I also checked out the program from an emergency USB stick (optical is also an option). The environment being Windows PE, there was no significant difference in the interface or performance, though if you have special hardware, you’ll need to add drivers when you create the emergency disk.

The exception to the “no significant difference” is the already discussed lack of cloud connectivity from the boot disk. You can back up and restore from local media or the network, but not from online. EaseUS says this capability is in the works.

You can also specify whether you want to recover your files to the original location or a separate recovery location, and whether or not you want to replace existing files.

File monitoring: This app allows you to set up a schedule for the program to monitor certain files through the Smart Backup feature. Every time modifications are detected in the monitored files, the app will Panda Dome Essential and 2019 create a backup of the new versions, so you never have to worry about losing your latest work.

Cons

Constant nagging: This app is free, but there are frequent pop-ups asking you to upgrade, easeus todo backup review. While some of this is to be expected in a free app, the extent of it in this program seems a little excessive.

What We Like

The restore feature may very well be our favorite thing about EaseUS Todo Backup. Similar backup programs require you to view a backup from within the program, but being able to mount a backup like it's an actual drive in Windows makes it extremely easy and natural to browse through.

We appreciate that a system partition backup is included. The fact that you can run it on a schedule makes it just that much more beneficial.

Securing a backup should be a feature in any good backup program, and EaseUS Todo Backup supports this. easeus todo backup review It's rare to see a backup program that lets you run the software before booting into Windows without using a disc or flash drive to run it, which is what Pre-OS in this program allows. What We Don't Like
