Even the most loyal Mac users recognise that Windows still rules the roost in the world of desktop and laptop computers, and there are many important apps that only run on Windows. For example, the Windows version of Microsoft Office includes the Access database that has never been available for the Mac, and there are many professional graphics and video tools that are Windows-only. Can I run Windows on a Mac?
When Apple moved to Intel processors back in parallel on mac, it also brought the ability to run Windows to the Mac because the macOS and Windows OS suddenly spoke the same language (the x86 instruction set used in Intel processors). This was a benefit to Apple because it took away one of the biggest concerns of Windows users when considering a move to the Mac – it meant they could bring Windows and their Windows software with them.

There are third-party solutions that address both of these issues.
There’s another issue with Boot Camp that is even more pressing though: it isn’t a feature of M-series Macs. So if you have purchased a Mac in the past couple or years, and it doesn’t have an Intel processor, parallel on mac, Boot Camp won’t even be an option.

What is a Virtual Machine?

Virtualization on an M-series Mac

The main problem here is that WoA isn’t normally licensed to individual users, which has meant that owners of M1 and M2 Macs faced both technical and licensing problems if they wanted to run Windows on their Macs. Parallels doesn’t allow you to also specify the number of GPU cores used by your virtual machines because, it says, the multiple GPU cores on the M1 and M2 chips are controlled solely by macOS.
The new version includes support for Stage Manager in macOS Ventura, so that your Windows apps will get tucked to the side of the screen alongside all your Mac apps. There’s also improved support for USB audio and video capture devices, and even game controllers for Windows games too.

2. VMWare Fusion 12

In other words, Fusion is in limbo at the moment, although the current Fusion 12 (version since Parallel on mac ) is still a good option for owners of Intel Macs that need to run the standard (Intel) version of Windows.

That’s bad news for owners of M1 Macs – but there’s actually some good news for owners of existing Macs that have Intel processors.
Fusion 12 added support for 3D graphics using both DirectX 11 and OpenGL, giving Fusion users access to a wider range of Windows games, parallel on mac, parallel on mac well as many professional graphics and design applications. We were also pleased to see that Fusion 12 added support for eGPUs – external GPUs – that can be used to boost graphics performance in your VMs, leaving your Mac’s main GPU free to concentrate just on the macOS.

3. Windows Cloud PC

Needs a fast – and always on – Internet connection.

Windows (which launched in July ) has the potential to really challenge traditional virtualization programs such as Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion. However, at the moment, Windows is still pretty expensive and is very much aimed at large corporate users, rather than the individuals and smaller businesses that tend to use Parallels and Fusion.
Microsoft describes Windows as a Cloud PC, but its technical notes make it clear that Windows is a form of virtual machine. The difference is that Parallels and Fusion create virtual machines that are stored locally on your Mac itself, and these virtual machines rely on your Mac’s own processor power, memory and storage to run Windows and Windows apps.
In contrast, Windows creates a virtual machine that is stored up in the cloud, and runs on Microsoft’s own servers. The video image for the Windows desktop on your cloud PC is then streamed to your Mac – or any other device, such as an iPad or even another Windows PC – via your broadband connection.
This form of virtual machine can work well, as long as you have a fast enough – and always parallel on mac – Internet connection. But, parallel on mac, as mentioned, Windows is quite expensive, with prices ranging from $31/£ to $66/£ per month. That’s compared to $/£ for a full year for the home user version of Parallels Desktop, while Fusion even has a completely free version for home users and students.
Windows certainly has appeal to larger businesses that want to provide a standardized cloud PC that their staff can connect to from any location that has an Internet connection – it’s ideal for hybrid working and the ‘new normal&rsquo. However, it’s too expensive for ordinary home users, students and smaller businesses, so existing users of Parallels and Fusion will probably want to stick with those apps parallel on mac the time being.

4. CrossOver 21

CodeWeavers CrossOver for Mac is based on Wine (see review below), but it gives Wine a (slightly) more user-friendly interface that is a bit easier to use. The downside is that it’s not free, costing $59 with 12 months technical support and upgrades, or $ for lifetime technical support. However, there is a free day trial available so that you can see if works with the Windows apps that you need to use before buying.
CrossOver 21 was released in the summer ofand although it’s not a major update it does improve compatibility with a number of big-name Windows games, parallel on mac, such as Skyrim Special Edition and Grand Theft Auto V. It also supports macOS Monterey, parallel on mac, and other Mac features such as Dark Mode. A update arrived in March which added a number of improvements related to Wine and Wine Mono and fixed some problems running certain apps and games on the M1.
At the moment, CrossOver is still written for Intel processors, so it relies on Apple’s Rosetta technology to provide compatibility with Apple’s M-series of processors, and future Apple Silicon chips.
Codeweavers also states that it has been working on native support for ARM processors and has also published a roadmap on its blog, outlining its plans for supporting Apple Silicon (as well as ARM hardware in general). It could still be a couple of years before a true native M-series version of CrossOver is available though.
5. Apple Boot Camp

Using dual-boot rather than virtualization technology, Boot Camp provides the best performance for Intel-based Macs that need to run Windows. (As we explained above, the M1/M2-based Macs do not offer Boot Camp).
It’s important to make a distinction between Boot Camp and the virtualization programs that we look at here, such as Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion and VirtualBox. Instead of creating a virtual machine that allows you to run Mac and Windows apps together at the same time, Boot Camp is a dual-boot system that simply allows you to boot (start) your Mac using either the native macOS or Windows (but not both at the same time).
Thanks to Boot Camp your Mac can act as a straightforward Windows PC, and devote all its processor power and memory to running Windows and your Windows apps. And, crucially, if your Mac has a decent graphics card, parallel on mac, it can use the full power of the graphics card to help run your Windows software. That’s definitely the best option for people who need to run high-end graphics software or 3D games, as you get much better performance than when running Windows in a virtual machine.
The disadvantage of using Boot Camp is that you lose access to all your Mac apps while you’re running Windows. Boot Camp can now only be used to install Windows 7, Windows or Windows 10 – Windows 11 requires the host computer to have a TPM (trusted platform module) and Macs don’t have them. The downside is that Wine can be spectacularly confusing for beginners – to the point where we can only really recommend it to hobbyists who like a bit of a challenge.
CodeWeavers CrossOver for Mac is a little easier to use than Wine, despite being closely related to the software. But of course Wine is free, which is a big bonus.
7. VirtualBox

VirtualBox hasn't officially been updated to run on macOS Monterey.
This open-source virtualization program is free for personal use – but more at home in a corporate environment.
VirtualBox is a bit of a mixed bag. Like Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion, it allows you to create a virtual machine that can run Windows and Parallel on mac apps from within macOS itself.
If you want it for personal or educational use then VirtualBox is free – it’s actually been made available as an open-source program by Oracle (Oracle also makes Wine available as an open-source program). You might think of Oracle as a big database company, but they basically own the core cod for parallel on mac solutions.
There are Linux and Windows versions of VirtualBox too, which allows you to use your virtual machines on many different types of computer (although you’ll still need to pay for your own Windows licence to get started).
The disadvantage of open-source software is that VirtualBox isn’t as polished or easy to use as Parallels or Fusion. A colleague on the The Sweet Setup team recently asked me a profound question related to Windows on the Mac — a question wherein I completely dropped the ball in answering. The question was simple:
Why would a regular Mac user choose to work in Windows on a Mac instead of macOS?
Tough question.
I’m going to answer a tangential question instead:
”How can a regular Mac user benefit by working in Windows on a Mac instead of macOS?”
My answer to the second question is fulfilled in one term: compatibility.
If you’re a Mac user working inside business of any sort, parallel on mac, you can bet you’ve run into multiple instances of cross-platform compatibility issues. A “Here’s a spreadsheet I built to calculate the return on investment” email hits with an Excel attachment and opening the workbook in Numbers just doesn’t do the trick. Or you take a course where the required software is available only on Windows. Or you have to help troubleshoot for a colleague and they have no idea what you mean when you parallel on mac “Hit the Command button.”
Been there, done that, right?
You can alleviate so many of these issues by working seamlessly between Windows and macOS using Parallels on the Mac. In Coherence Mode, Parallels effectively treats Windows and macOS as equals, putting windows side-by-side in a way that it would be difficult to determine if you’re working in a Windows app or inside a Mac app.
Parallels boosts compatibility across platforms and the experience is relatively seamless. There are, however, a few ways to boost the seamlessness of working across both Mac and Windows, parallel on mac. Inside Parallels, Change Command Key to Control Key
Perhaps the biggest disruption when flipping between macOS and Windows 11 is the situation around the Command key. In my sincerest and humblest opinion, the Command key is superior to the Control/Windows key arrangement in Windows. The Windows key brings up the Start menu when hit, while Control handles a hodge-podge of keyboard shortcuts inside Windows applications. Command inside macOS is more like the Control key than like the Windows key, but Command seems to fit the bill more than Control does in Windows, parallel on mac. Plus, Command is in a more ergonomic position, if you ask me.
All told, if you’re a regular keyboard shortcut user in macOS, you’re going to want to turn off the Windows key support and remap the Command key to act as a second Control key in Windows.
In Parallels’ Activate Ofice 2010 Without Product key, go to Hardware → Mouse & Keyboard → Open Parallel on mac Preferences… and select your Windows virtual machine. From here, click the + button to add a keyboard shortcut and map the Command key to the Control key in the Windows parallel on mac machine.
Once created, the Command key will no longer trigger the Windows key in Windows in Parallels. Instead, you’ll effectively have two Control keys on your keyboard when working in a Windows app. Which, as I stated above, really isn’t a duplication parallel on mac the limited use of the Windows key.
Having Control in the Command key location will allow you to have more consistent text selection across Windows and macOS, parallel on mac provide more consistent cell movement experience in spreadsheet apps, and maintains consistency for standard keyboard shortcut operations like printing, opening a file, and saving a file.

No matter how big a fanboy you are of Apple’s choices, you must admit to at least a few superiorities in Windows.
One of those areas for me: Windows Explorer keyboard navigation.
In Windows Explorer, you can navigate into a set of files and folders by using the Enter/Return key. In macOS, parallel on mac, the same keyboard shortcut is. The extra hand requirement to hold down the Command key is truly infuriating, especially if you’re not used to it.
Fortunately, you can quickly create a keyboard modification inside Karabiner Elements which brings Windows Explorer keyboard navigation to macOS.
First, you’ll need Karabiner Elements, a keyboard remapping program (among other things). You can download it here.
Next, inside Karabiner Elements, click Complex Modifications → Add Rule in the bottom left corner, and then Import more rules from the Internet at the top of the pop up window.
A browser window will open. Search for Use Return as Open and click the Finder result. You’ll note six different modifications, such as Use Return as Open, Use Return as Open and Fn+Return as Rename, and more. Click Import to open the modifications inside Karabiner Elements.
Finally, in Karabiner Elements, click Add rule again and enable the keyboard modifications you want. I use Use Return as Open and Fn+Return as Rename and Use F2 as Rename, which more closely reflects the file renaming keyboard shortcut inside Windows Explorer.
Now, parallel on mac, when you navigate through files and folders in Finder, you can navigate into folders by hitting the Return key rather than needing to use two hands to hit to open a folder.
Choose Cross Platform Default Apps
Since you’re effectively using two computers and two sets of apps when working back and forth between Windows and macOS, you’re bound to fall into doubled-up applications and workflows. For instance, I have 1Password installed on both macOS and Windows 11 despite the ability to transfer your clipboard back and forth between operating systems.
By default, you’ll have access to both Finder and Windows Explorer for navigating your file and folder structure. I have our large OneDrive file structure immediately accessible in both Finder and Windows Explorer and I use them interchangeably throughout the day, wherever I find myself working at that time.
But what can be annoying is the inconsistency in the apps chosen to open certain files. If you want to open a PDF in Finder, Finder will automatically open that PDF in macOS’s Preview app. And if you open that same PDF with Windows Explorer, Windows 11 wants to open the PDF in Microsoft Edge or a PDF parallel on mac installed inside the Windows VM.
Fortunately, you can select the same default app for opening PDFs, Excel worksheets, Word documents or parallel on mac files, no matter where you open them from.
In macOS
Choosing a default application for opening a specific file type in macOS is pretty easy if it’s a Mac app — simply right-click on a file, highlight Open With in the menu, select Other, and choose your default app while checking the box that says Always open with at the bottom of the dialog box. A Mac app in macOS is easy.
But what if you want to parallel on mac a Windows application by default when you open a file in Finder?
Here, you’ll have to right-click the file, highlight Open With in the menu, parallel on mac, and select Other. In the left sidebar, select your home user profile, parallel on mac, select Applications (Parallels), select your VM’s application folder, and then select the app you want to use to open the specific file type.
This is especially handy for opening all .xls and .xlsx workbooks in Excel in the Windows VM without opening them in Numbers or the macOS version of Excel (if you have them installed on macOS). Same goes for Word documents and Pages.
In Windows
Selecting a default app is a little easier in Windows. Simply right-click the file you want to open, highlight Open With, and select the app you want to use from the list. That list combines all apps across the Windows VM and macOS — you don’t have to navigate to a special folder to find the macOS app list.
I’ve used this ability to ensure I am opening all PDFs across macOS and Windows inside Preview on the Mac — no matter whether I open that PDF from Windows Explorer or from Finder. I’ve also ensured text files and Markdown files appropriately open in a macOS app and all photograph files (be they raw or .jpegs) open inside apps on macOS.
Wrap Up
The premise of working inside both Windows and macOS on the same high-quality MacBook Pro device is still a new phenomenon to me. Each day, I discover new tips and tricks, new workflows, and new ways to not do things.
These three tips have been the most useful to me over the last six months of heavy Parallels/Windows/macOS use. These three Aha! moments consistently brought a smile to my face and have consistently saved me headaches and frustration each day.

I hadn&#;t tried Parallels before. I was provided a review license and installed an earlier version on my iMac. For the last week, I&#;ve been putting it through its paces, installing Windows 10 (purchased just for this review) and several other operating systems, and trying just about every feature in the program.
The new version was released, so I immediately upgraded. This review reflects my use of both versions. In this Parallels Desktop review, I&#;ll share what I like and dislike about Parallels Desktop. The content in the quick summary box above serves as a short version of my findings and conclusions.

Parallels Desktop Review: What&#;s In It for You?
Since Parallels Desktop is all about running Windows apps (and more) on your Mac, I&#;m going to list all its features by putting them into the following five sections. In each subsection, parallel on mac, I&#;ll first explore what the app offers and then share my personal take.
1. Turn Your Mac Into Several Computers with Parallel on mac Desktop is virtualization software — it emulates a new computer in software. On that virtual computer, you can run any operating system you like, including Windows, and any software that runs on that operating system. That&#;s very convenient if you need non-Mac software.
A virtual machine will run slower than your real computer, but Parallels has worked hard to optimize performance. But why run a slower virtual machine when you can install Windows on your actual computer using Bootcamp? My personal take: Virtualization technology provides a convenient way of accessing non-Mac software while using macOS, parallel on mac. If you need regular access to Windows apps, Parallel’s implementation is superb.
2. Run Windows on Your Mac Without Rebooting
You may need to run Windows on your Mac for a variety of reasons. Here are some examples:

Web developers can test their websites on a variety of Windows browsers
Writers can create documentation and reviews about Windows software.
Parallels provides the virtual machine, you need to supply Microsoft Windows. There are three options:
Purchase it directly from Microsoft and download it.
Purchase it from a store and install from a USB stick.
Transfer Windows from your PC or Bootcamp.
Transferring a previously-installed version of Windows is the least-recommended option, parallel on mac, as it can lead to licensing issues or driver problems. In my case, I purchased a shrink-wrapped version of Windows 10 Home from a store. The price was the same as downloading from Microsoft: $ Aussie dollars.
I started up Parallels Desktop, inserted my USB stick, and Windows was installed without fuss.
Once installed, Windows feels snappy and responsive. Moving from Windows to Mac and back again is fast and seamless. I&#;ll explain how that&#;s done in the next section.
My personal take: For those needing access to Windows while using macOS, Parallels Desktop is a godsend. They have obviously worked hard to optimize their software for Windows, parallel on mac, as it is incredibly responsive.
3. Switch Conveniently between Mac and Windows
How easy is switching between Mac and Windows using Parallels Desktop? You don&#;t even notice it. By default, it runs inside a window like this.
When my mouse is outside of that window, it is the black Mac mouse cursor, parallel on mac. Once it moves inside the window, it becomes the white Windows mouse cursor automatically parallel on mac instantly.
For some uses that can feel a little cramped. Pressing the green Maximize button will make Windows run full screen. The screen resolution adjusts automatically. You can switch to and from Windows using a four-finger swipe.
Very fast, very easy, very intuitive. Switching between Mac and Windows couldn&#;t be easier. Here&#;s another bonus. For convenience, I found myself leaving Windows open even when I wasn&#;t using it. When not in use, Parallels pauses the virtual machine to reduce the load on your computer.
Once your mouse enters the Windows environment again, Windows is up and running again within about three seconds.
My personal take: Whether running Windows full-screen or in a window, switching to it is simple and seamless. It’s no harder than switching to a native Mac app.
When I first moved away from Windows, I found myself still relying on a few key apps. You might be the same:
You switched to Mac, but still have a number of Windows apps you rely on — perhaps the Windows versions of Word and Excel, the Xbox Streaming app, parallel on mac, or a Windows-only game.
You may still absolutely depend on a legacy app that no longer works on modern operating systems.
It&#;s surprising how reliant businesses can become on out-of-date software that is no longer updated or supported. Parallels Desktop provides a Coherence Mode which lets you work with Windows apps without dealing with the Windows interface. David Ludlow sums it up: &#;Coherence turns your Windows apps into Mac ones.&#;
Coherence Mode hides the Windows interface altogether, parallel on mac. You launch the Start Menu by clicking the Windows 10 icon on your dock.
You can search for and run the Windows Paint program from Spotlight.
And the Mac&#;s right-click Open With menu even lists Windows apps.
My personal take: Parallels Desktop allows you to use Windows apps almost as if they were Mac apps. You can start the apps from your Mac’s Dock, Spotlight, or a context menu.
5. Run Other Operating Systems on Your Mac
The convenience of Parallels Desktop doesn&#;t stop with Windows. You can run a variety of operating systems, including Linux, Android, and macOS. Why would someone want to do that? Here are some examples:
A developer working on an app that runs on multiple platforms can use virtual computers to run Windows, Linux, and Android cyberghost vpn chrome test the software on.
Mac developers can run older versions of macOS and OS X to test compatibility.
A Linux enthusiast can run and compare multiple distros at once.
You can install macOS from your recovery partition or a disk image. You can also install older versions of OS X if you still have the installation DVDs or disk images. I chose to install macOS from my recovery partition.
I found macOS significantly less responsive than Windows — I assume Parallel&#;s main priority is Windows performance. It was definitely usable, though.
Installing Linux is similar. You can either choose to have Parallels Desktop download a number of Linux distros (including Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Debian and Linux Mint), parallel on mac, or install from a disk image.
Like macOS, Linux seems less responsive than Windows. Once you have a few operating systems installed, the Parallels Desktop Control Panel is a handy way to start and stop them.
My personal take: Parallels Desktop can run macOS or Linux on a virtual machine, though not with the same speed as Windows, or with as many integration features. But the software is stable and usable all the same.
Reasons Behind My Ratings
Effectiveness: 5/5
Parallels Desktop does exactly what it promises: it runs Windows apps alongside my Mac apps, parallel on mac. Running Windows in a virtual machine was convenient and responsive and allowed me to access Windows apps that I rely on. Windows paused when not in use, so unnecessary resources were not being wasted.
Price: /5
Although there are free virtualization options, $ is a reasonable price to pay for the amount of work Parallels has put into optimizing performance and integration.

I found launching Windows and switching between Mac and Windows absolutely intuitive. The integrated approach of displaying Windows software in Spotlight searches, context menus and the Dock is brilliant.

Alternatives to Parallels Desktop
VMware Fusion: VMware Fusion is Parallel Desktop&#;s closest competitor, and is a little slower and more technical. A major upgrade is about to be released.
Veertu Desktop: Veertu (free, $ for premium) is a lightweight alternative. It&#;s Vectric PhotoVCarve Free Download as quick as Parallels, but has fewer features.
VirtualBox: VirtualBox is Oracle&#;s free and open-source alternative. Not as polished or responsive as Parallels Desktop, parallel on mac, it&#;s a good alternative when performance is not at a premium.
Boot Camp: Boot Camp comes installed with parallel on mac, and allows you to run Windows alongside macOS in a dual-boot setup — to switch you need to restart your computer. That&#;s less convenient but has performance benefits.

Parallels Desktop lets you run Windows apps on your Mac. That can be very handy if you rely on certain Windows apps for your business, or have switched to Mac and can’t find alternatives for everything you need.
Is it worth it? If you have Mac apps for everything you need you won’t need Parallels, and if you need parallel on mac a few non-critical Windows apps a free alternative may meet your needs, parallel on mac. But if you rely on Windows apps to get your work done, you’ll need the premium Windows performance that Parallels Desktop provides.
