How to Take a Screenshot on a Samsung Phone or Tablet
You can take a screenshot with every Android phone and tablet, but the exact method to do so will depend on your device manufacturer.
If you have a Samsung Galaxy device, you have many methods at your disposal, like pressing buttons or swiping across the screen. We're going to detail how to screenshot on a Samsung tablet and phone.
1. Press the Power and Volume Down Buttons
For most, this will be the easiest way to take a screenshot on a Samsung phone or tablet.
Simply hold down the Power button (or Side key) and the Volume down button simultaneously.
The exact location of these buttons will depend on your device. On the Samsung Galaxy S21, both of those buttons are on the right side of the device. On the Samsung Galaxy S8, volume is on the left and power is on the right.
You only need to hold these buttons for a second or two. The screen will flash white to indicate a screenshot has been taken.
This is a standard Android screenshot shortcut that will work on more than just Samsung devices.
2. Use Palm Swipe
On some Samsung devices, you can swipe your palm across the screen to take a screenshot.
3 Images
To enable this, go to Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures > Palm swipe to capture > On.
Now, swipe the edge of your hand across the screen from right to left to take a screenshot.
If you're unsure of the exact motion, the Settings screen will show you an animation that demonstrates.
3. Ask Bixby or Google Assistant
If you have a voice-activated virtual assistant set up on your phone, you can use it to take a screenshot.
If you have Bixby Voice, say "Hey Bixby, take a screenshot". Alternatively, if you have Google Assistant, say "Hey Google, take a screenshot".
You can pair these commands with other instructions, like "Hey Bixby, take a screenshot and share on Instagram".

4. Use the Edge Panel
Some Samsung devices have edge panels. These are handy features that you can quickly access by swiping the side of the screen. One edge panel that you can enable allows you to take screenshots.

To enable this, go to Settings > Display > Edge screen > Edge panels > On. From here, enable the Smart select panel.
Now, when you swipe in from the right edge of your screen, it will bring up the Smart select panel.
Select either Rectangle or Oval, then drag to choose the area you want to screenshot. Tap Done, then tap the Save icon (the down arrow).
5. Use the S Pen
If you have a Galaxy Note device, you can use the S Pen to take a screenshot.
Take the S Pen from the device, tap the Air command menu icon, then tap Screen write. This will take a full screenshot. You can then edit the screenshot using the on-screen tools, if desired. Once done, tap the Save icon.
6. Use Scroll Capture to Screenshot the Entire Page
If you want to capture a long webpage or app, you don't need to take multiple screenshots. Instead, you can use Samsung's Scroll Capture Feature to create a single large screenshot.
After taking a normal screenshot, the Smart Capture menu appears at the bottom of the screen. On this, tap the Scroll Capture icon—it's two downwards arrows that bounce.
One tap will scroll the page down once and stitch the screenshot to the bottom of the first. Keep tapping the icon until you've captured everything on the page that you want.
How to View Your Samsung Screenshots
Once you've taken a screenshot on your Samsung phone or tablet, you might wonder where they're saved and how you can access them. That's simple.
Open the Gallery app and select Albums from the bottom menu. You will then see a Screenshots album that you can manage like regular photos.

SubscribeHow to take a screenshot with a Samsung phone
Whether you're trying to save a bit of information for later or want to share something you came across, it's hard to find a more useful feature on our smartphone these days than the ability to take a screenshot. Thankfully, most Android manufacturers have standardized this process, so learning how to take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy phone should be a piece of cake. Don't believe me? I'll show you how below.
How to take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy S or Note phone
There are a bunch of ways to take a screenshot with a Samsung phone; one is pretty obvious and the other two ways a little less so. We'll walk you through all three of these methods below.
Note: These methods apply to most Samsung Galaxy smartphones, including the Galaxy S and now-defunct Note lines, along with most modern Galaxy A models from the last four years. If your phone is over four years old, it may only support the below key combination screenshot method, and not the other two.
How to screenshot on a Samsung phone using a key combination
Like most Android smartphones, taking a quick screenshot on a Samsung phone combines the power button and the volume button in a quick gesture that may take some getting used to. But once you've mastered it, you'll never miss it again.
- Open the content you want to screenshot.
- At the same time, press the power and volume down buttons for one second, and release them.
- Note that if you hold the buttons more than a second, your phone will either launch a long-press action with the power button or adjust the volume down. You only need to hold the buttons for a second to take a screenshot.
- The screenshot will be immediately shareable from the bottom bar that pops on screen (far right button), or you can access it from the notification shade instead.
- You can also jump into an editing mode by using the center button. This lets you crop and draw on the screenshot before sharing or saving.
How to screenshot on a Samsung phone using a palm swipe
- Open the content to screenshot.
- Place your hand vertically on the left or right edge of the phone, and swipe it across the screen, while keeping your hand in contact with the screen, in one motion.
- If this method doesn't work, go into Settings, Advanced features, Motions and gestures and make sure Palm swipe to capture is turned on.
- The screenshot will be saved, shareable, and editable in the exact same way from either the on-screen toolbar or the notification shade.
How to screenshot on a Samsung phone using Bixby Voice
Bixby Voice can be used to take a screenshot if you're unable to grab your phone to use the buttons or palm swipe.
- Open the content to screenshot.
- By default, a long-press of the button will launch Bixby Voice, after you've opened it once.
- With the interface activated, say "take a screenshot."
- With the Bixby method, you miss out on the instant edit capabilities of the other methods. You can, however, string together commands such as "take a screenshot and share it to Twitter" if you want to get elaborate.
Capture more with "scroll capture"
No matter how you start your screenshot, after capturing you'll see a set of options at the bottom of the screen, including "screen capture." This button — on the left side, a box with down-facing arrows in it — makes the phone scroll through the content on the screen and take multiple screenshots, which are then stitched together into one tall screenshot showing everything together. This is super useful for capturing a full webpage, a set of turn-by-turn directions, or a long restaurant menu. While Samsung phones have had this feature for years, Google started rolling it out natively on Android
Just tap the scroll capture button as many times as you need — it will also stop automatically once you've reached the bottom of the screen. And as soon as you're done you can share, edit, or save the screenshot just like any other.
To save a bit of tapping, you can also hold down on the scrolling button to capture an entire document or page in one fell swoop.
To access your screenshots for later, head to the Samsung Gallery app, which is found inside your launcher's app drawer. Screenshots are saved in the main camera roll, but you can also head to the Album tab and find all of your screenshots in one place inside the Screenshot album.

How to take a screenshot on a Samsung phone
Step
1
Choose the shot youd like to take
First of all, youve got to be looking at the screenshot that you want to take; once the process is complete, you will have saved an image of exactly whats on your display at that moment. This might sound obvious, but do care take not to accidentally capture a part of the screen you wouldnt like to share, especially if it reveals private information.
Step
2
Press down the power button and the lower volume key at the same time
If youve got a Samsung phone from the last few years, press down the power button (or Bixby button), and the lower volume key at the same time. Depending on your phone, they might be on the same side or opposing sides of the screen. You dont have to keep this position held for very long; simply click them at the same time for a second, and your shot should be captured.
Step
3
If on an older handset, press the home button and the power button at the same time
If your Samsung phone is a bit older and has a home button below the screen (resembling the image below) then the process is slightly different.
Press down the home button and the lower volume slider in the same manner – both at the same time, for just a second – and you will have taken a screenshot.
Step
4
Edit or share your screenshot as you wish
Youll know that the screenshot has been taken because youll see either a notification at the top of the screen (on an older phone) or else a floating window towards the bottom, which prompts you to edit or share the screenshot youve just taken.
Its often advisable to make a couple of changes, especially such as cropping the shot in order to better frame a certain part of the image or remove potentially sensitive information from the notifications bar at the top, and then you can share it via a messaging app if you wish.
Step
5
You can find screenshots in the Gallery app
If you took a screenshot to save for later rather than sending right away, then you can find it (along with previous screenshots that youve taken) in the Gallery app of your phone, in a dedicated folder that is aptly named Screenshots.

Being able to take a screenshot can be incredibly useful, whether you’re using it as a reminder of a message or some information, a quick way to save a picture, or a way to illustrate an article such as this one.
But not all phones take screenshots in the same way. In fact, not even all Samsung phones do. But the good news is that capturing a screenshot is always a simple process, so once you know the correct method for your Samsung phone, it will be a breeze.
Below then we’ve detailed all the possible methods of taking a screenshot with a Samsung phone, starting with the most common one.

How to take a screenshot on a Samsung phone in depth
Need more detailed information? Here are all the methods for screenshotting with a Samsung phone, followed by information on scrolling screenshots and how to view and edit your captured image.
Press the power and volume down keys
Many recent Samsung phones – including the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 lines – let you take a screenshot simply by pressing the volume down and power buttons at the same time. In fact, if your phone has both of these buttons then this method should work.
You’ll know a screenshot has been taken as your display will flash, likely accompanied by a sound if you don’t have your phone muted.
If your phone doesn’t have a Bixby button then this should just be a quick tap rather than holding the buttons, as the latter is likely to open the power menu. On handsets with a Bixby button, a longer hold is more likely to get the job done.
Press the power and home key
For Samsung phones with a physical home key under the display, you simply press and hold that button and the power button at the same time to take a screenshot. You can let go when the screen flashes.
This method is mostly used on older Samsung handsets.
Swipe your hand
In addition to pressing one of the button combinations above, many Samsung phones also let you swipe the edge of your hand across the screen (from left to right) to take a screenshot.
As with other methods your screen will flash when the screenshot has taken, and in theory this could be the fastest and slickest way to take a screenshot – except in practice we find it a bit hit and miss, so it might take a while to consistently get the technique right.
You may also need to enable this gesture control before you can use it. To do that, head to Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures, then tap the toggle next to ‘Palm swipe to capture.’
Use the S Pen
As well as one or more of the methods above, owners of Samsung phones with S Pens – such as the Galaxy Note line and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – can use their stylus to take a screenshot.
There are two ways to do this. One is to remove the S Pen from its holder, then open the S Pen menu and tap ‘smart select.’ Then simply select the part of the screen that you want to capture.
The other method is to tap ‘screen write’ in the S Pen menu, and then select the part of the screen you want to capture.
These methods are handy if you don’t want to capture the whole screen.
How to take a scrolling screenshot
If you want to capture more than one full screen of information, then you’ll need a scrolling screenshot. To take one of these, use one of the button or gesture methods above, then notice the icons that briefly appear at the bottom of the display when the screenshot is taken.
One of these should be a picture of two downward arrows in a box – it may also say ‘scroll capture.’ Tap this, and your screen shot will scroll down to capture more of the page. If you still need to capture more then just keep tapping it until you’ve got everything you need. If that icon doesn’t appear then you’ve likely captured everything already.
How to view and edit screenshots
When you take a screenshot, you’ll see a number of icons briefly appear at the bottom of the display, along with a thumbnail of the screenshot itself. Tap the thumbnail to open it – or just head to the gallery app.
To edit, hit the edit button or pencil icon while viewing the screenshot, or - if you want to annotate it - hit the icon that looks like a pencil next to a square that appears when you take a screenshot.

Its often advisable to make a couple of changes, especially such as cropping the shot in order to better frame a certain part of the image or remove potentially sensitive information from the notifications bar at the top, and then you can share it via a messaging app if you wish.

At some point, you’ll want to take a screenshot on your Samsung Galaxy S20, whether you want to record what you’re doing in an app, a game, or on your home screen. There are several ways to do this, and understanding the differences can be helpful. Smart capture, for example, allows you to capture a single page or display by scrolling down as you capture the image, as opposed to what’s just shown on the screen.

- Using the physical hardware buttons.
- With a palm swipe gesture.
- Using the Smart Capture tool for scrolling shots.
- By talking with Bixby, Samsung’s smart voice assistant.
- By talking to Google Assistant.
- With Smart Select in the Edge Panel.
How to Take a Screenshot on S20 With the Hardware Buttons
The most common and easiest way to take a screenshot is to press the physical buttons in a certain combination. Here’s how to do that:
Position what you want to capture on the screen. What you see is what will show in the screenshot.
Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously.
If you did it correctly you should see a snapshot of your screen. It will show for a brief moment and then go away.
You can access your screenshots in the Samsung gallery.
How to Take a Screenshot on S20 With a Palm Swipe
Taking a screenshot with the palm swipe gesture will take some practice, but once you get used to it, it’s also a fairly easy way to capture what’s on the screen.
Before you can use the gesture, however, you’ll need to double-check it’s enabled in the Samsung settings.
How to Enable the Palm Swipe Mode
To enable the palm gesture function:
Navigate to Settings > Advanced Features.
Tap Motion and Gestures.
In Motion and Gestures, you’ll find an option called Palm Swipe to Capture. Make sure it’s enabled by interacting with the toggle. It will turn blue when it’s enabled, or white and grey when it’s disabled.

Once you’re sure the function is enabled in settings, situate whatever you want to capture on the screen. You may need to practice the action before getting the hang of it.
With your palm facing sideways, place the side of your hand in the center of the screen and swipe it across the display.
If it worked you will see a snapshot animation on your screen, which will show for a second or two and then go away.
How to Take a Screenshot on S20 With Smart Capture
Smart Capture can be used to capture a huge wall of text or content, usually on a website. As the image is captured you can scroll down, creating a panoramic-style shot. You can also activate the mode using any one of the screenshot methods. For example, you can start Smart Capture by pressing the hardware buttons or with a palm swipe. It’s your choice.
Before you can use Smart Capture, you’ll need to make sure the function is enabled.
How to Enable Smart Capture
To enable Smart Capture:
Navigate to Settings > Advanced Features
Tap Screenshots and screen recorder.
Then, make sure the Screenshot Toolbar is enabled by interacting with the toggle. It will be blue if the function is enabled, or white and grey if it’s disabled.

Here’s how to take a scrolling Smart Capture of a website or application:
Situate the content you want to capture on the screen by opening the page in your browser or the application.
Activate the screenshot using your method of choice, whether via the hardware buttons or palm swipe gesture.
The screenshot toolbar will show at the bottom of the screen. Tap the first icon from the left, called Scroll Capture. Continue tapping that button if you want to capture more of the page.
When you’re done, tap somewhere on the screen to exit the mode and save the screenshot.
How to Use Bixby to Capture a Screenshot on the S20
Bixby is Samsung’s voice assistant, similar to Siri or Alexa. You can use the tool to take a screenshot with a simple voice command, but first, you’ll need to make sure the function is enabled.
How to Enable Voice Commands With Bixby
Let's get the voice commands enabled.
Navigate to Bixby Home. You can open Bixby Home by pressing the dedicated button and tapping the home icon.
Then tap the Settings gear icon.
Then, make sure the Voice Wake-Up setting is enabled. This will allow Bixby to respond to your voice commands. The toggle will be blue if it’s activated or grey and white if it’s disabled.

To call upon Bixby for screenshots:
Situate what you want to capture on the screen.
Either press and hold the Bixby button to talk, or just say “Hi Bixby.”
When Bixby activates, say “Take a screenshot.” The tool will capture the screen as if you took the screenshot yourself.
You may need to update the basic Bixby commands before this function will work. If so, the Bixby app will notify you before it does anything.
How to Use Google Assistant to Capture a Screenshot on S20
Besides Bixby, the Galaxy S20 also has Google’s voice assistant on the device. You use this tool to issue voice commands and capture a screenshot, just like you can with Bixby.
Here’s how to use Google Assistant to take a screenshot:
Make sure the content you want to capture is on the screen.
Say, “Okay Google.” Wait for the assistant to activate. The phone will vibrate when it does.
When the prompt appears, simply say “take a screenshot.” Google Assistant will capture what’s on the screen.
How to Take a Screenshot Using Smart Select on S20
The Samsung Smart Select feature lets you capture a screenshot and choose what will be included. This is a great way to capture a small portion of the screen, select elements, or censor content you don’t want to be included.
First, you’ll need to make sure the function is enabled.
How to Enable Smart Select on Galaxy S20
Here’s how to turn on the Samsung Smart Select function:
Navigate to Settings > Display > Edge Screen > Edge Panels. Make sure the Edge Panels are enabled. The toggle will be blue if active.
